 SMTS or Scale Model Technical Services was founded in 1983 by Keith Williams and John Allen, both former employees of Western Models together with Steve Overy who later left to form Illustra Models. Their first release was a 1/43 scale a Arrows A6 Grand Prix car which was available as a built model either in Barclay colours or in the Grand Prix International livery from the 1983 British Grand Prix or as a kit which, initially had decals covering any of the many liveries that the car carried during the season. 

Over the years the company has made many more metal kits and built models in 1/43 and 1/24 scale of road and race cars as well as undertaking commissions for all types of models for various companies.
