Founded in 1937 the first Solido product was a range of simple toy cars. By the 1960's they were producing good quality diecasts, often working from blueprints provided by the car manufacturers. While Dinky and Corgi were using jewelled headlights and tail lights Solido were using plastic lenses to give a more accurate representation of vehicle lights and also produced correct pattern copies of the real cars wheels for each vehicle.
The range grew to include commercial vehicles, fire engines, military vehicles, the superb Age d'Or range of mainly vintage cars and they even produced models of some heavy haulage vehicles as well as various gift sets making them very much the French equivalent to Dinky and Corgi Toys.
Solido wasn't widely available in toy shops in the UK but the accuracy and quality of the models made them a favourite with many UK collectors who sourced them direct from France or from the small number of specialist collectors shop that were beginning to open. In 1980 the company was taken over by Majorette and many of the models were simplified by sealing opening panels and were rereleased by Verem. In recent years the company has released a 1/18 scale range and moved towards producing better quality models specifically for collectors.
