Launched in 1983 the first Vitesse releases were a series of Porsche 956 models with a set of decals included in the box for the collector to apply. The range was expanded to include road and rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Opel Manta 400.
Many of the colours schemes on the race and rally cars were complex and the decals could be difficult to apply correctly and it wasn't long before Vitesse realised that sales would increase substantially if the decals were applied in the factory.
The business grew rapidly and several ranges were launched under different brand names including Onyx for current Formula One models, Quartzo for classic F1, sports racing / GT cars and NASCAR, Victoria for military vehicles, Skid for rally cars as well as continuing to use the Vitesse brand for modern and classic road cars.
The mid 1990's saw Vitesse in financial difficulties caused by massive over production and many models being sold at big discounts in a bid to recover some money so that the business could continue to trade but eventual;y the money ran out and the company closed down.
The assets were bought by Sunstar who continue to use the Vitesse name for one of their 1/43 scale diecast ranges.
